Carlton Spotlight: Benjamin Dick
At Carlton National Resources, success in Life Sciences business development comes from preparation, consistency, and adaptability. For Benjamin Dick, Business Development Manager on the Life Sciences team, intentional outreach and thoughtful client strategy shape each day. He also focuses on maintaining momentum across a growing book of business.
A Strategic Approach to Life Sciences Business Development
Ben structures his day around client meetings and prepares for each conversation in advance.
“If I have scheduled calls with a particular client, I dive into my list for that account ahead of time to understand where our projects overlap,” he explains.
His mornings often focus on re-prospecting active clients and identifying new ways Carlton can support their needs. Ben spends his afternoons balancing scheduled meetings with consistent phone outreach, typically working until about 5:30 PM.
“Except for Wednesdays in the summer,” he adds, “when we cut out a little early for nine holes of golf.”
This consistent approach helps Ben strengthen existing relationships while continuing to identify new opportunities within the Life Sciences industry.
What Ben Values About Carlton National
One aspect Ben values most about Carlton is the independence and flexibility that comes with his role.
“The ability to run your own desk and still maintain work-life balance is second to none,” he says. “If you put your head down and work hard, the flexibility to enjoy time outside the office is always there.”
He also points to the culture within the Life Sciences team and the Wakefield office as a major differentiator.
“Everyone has the same goals and helps each other get there, and there is never a dull moment.”
That combination of independence and collaboration gives team members room to take ownership of their work while still having the support of those around them.
Staying Resilient in Business Development
Challenges naturally come with business development, and Ben approaches them with a forward-focused mindset.
“Short-term memory is key,” he notes. “If something does not work out, it is on to the next opportunity.”
Ben keeps his momentum by continuously identifying potential client partners and maintaining a strong pipeline across multiple companies. Rather than allowing one setback to slow progress, he shifts his attention toward the next opportunity.
Outside of work, Ben enjoys staying active and competitive. Golf, traveling, fantasy football, and following the New England Patriots all help him recharge.
He also has an interesting family background. His mother grew up in London, giving Ben a large extended family overseas. Actor Tim Allen, known for voicing Buzz Lightyear and starring in The Santa Clause, is his father’s first cousin.
Finding Motivation in the Life Sciences Industry
Ben draws motivation from both his team and the impact of the work itself.
“There is a healthy level of competition within the sales team that pushes me to be better,” he says. “The depth of industry knowledge on the Life Sciences team is the best I have experienced.”
He finds the biopharma industry particularly compelling and enjoys learning about the work behind products that can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. That connection is also personal for Ben.
“My aunt passed away from pancreatic cancer a few years ago,” he shares. “Any time I can help, even in a small way, support companies working to treat cancer or rare diseases, it motivates me to keep pushing.”
That sense of purpose adds another layer to Ben’s work in Life Sciences business development and reinforces his commitment to supporting organizations across the industry.
Growth, Goals, and What Comes Next
Looking back on his time at Carlton, Ben takes pride in the growth he has achieved. He built every client relationship he manages today through his own outreach and effort, bringing new business into the organization.
Ben also considers his transition from recruiting into sales an important milestone in his career.
“I am not exactly where I want to be yet,” he admits, “but I have been able to break bad habits, change the way I work, and continue growing.”
Looking ahead, Ben wants to expand his impact even further. With several large accounts in mind for 2026, he plans to continue growing his book of business and become the go-to partner for key clients.
His approach remains rooted in consistency, resilience, and a genuine commitment to the Life Sciences industry. Those qualities continue to make Ben a valued member of the Carlton National Resources team.
