Carlton Spotlight: Ian Kimmett
At Carlton National Resources, success in Life Sciences recruiting is built on consistency, resilience, and strong relationships. For Ian Kimmett, Technical Recruiter on the Life Sciences team, each day is driven by energy, competition, and a focus on growing a network of high-level consultants across the industry.
Starting Each Day with Momentum
Ian starts his day early and with intention.
“Typical day at Carlton National starts with a big pot of coffee,” he says.
From there, his focus quickly shifts to activity and outreach.
“After that it’s all about hitting the phones and as our leader Fred Haddad says, ‘Make the market feel you.’”
A typical day includes consistent phone outreach with one clear goal in mind.
“A typical day includes heavy phone lifting, with the goal of growing my consultant database with talented, high end Life Science Contractors.”
That daily consistency helps Ian expand his network while staying connected to professionals across the Life Sciences market.
The People and Training Behind the Role
What Ian enjoys most about Carlton comes down to the people and the foundation the company provides.
“The people for sure, and the training aspect that you get when you start,” he shares.
He also highlights the impact of Carlton’s training program.
“Michael Catapano runs the Training Program and is tremendous at getting you going, whether you are a 15 year staffing person or right out of school. He is the best.”
In addition, Ian values the competitive nature of working for a smaller firm within a large industry.
“I enjoy the fact that we are a smaller firm competing against the biggest and best in the industry. This makes the success that Carlton gains so much more rewarding.”
Building Relationships in Life Sciences Recruiting
One of Ian’s standout moments at Carlton came when he made his first placement with a top-tier pharmaceutical client.
He previously worked in medical device staffing, so transitioning into pharmaceutical recruiting made the accomplishment especially meaningful.
“Having come from a prominent Medical Device Staffing Agency and to find success within the pharmaceutical industry was very rewarding,” he explains.
However, placements are only part of what Ian finds fulfilling.
“I really do enjoy developing and cultivating working relationships with consultants on a daily basis. It’s the relationships over the years that feels fulfilling.”
That relationship-driven mindset continues to shape his approach to Life Sciences recruiting.
Learning to Embrace the Process
Like many professionals in staffing, Ian has adapted his approach over time.
Moving from a rapid, transactional environment into a more relationship-driven model required a change in perspective.
“The biggest challenge coming from a R2R staffing agency was embracing the marathon which is database consulting staffing,” he says.
As a result, he has learned to slow down and place greater value on the process.
“This has made me slow down and really embrace the process at Carlton. It’s all about strengthening those relationships, especially when folks are out of work.”
That shift has helped Ian focus on long-term relationships instead of short-term outcomes.
Life Outside the Office
Outside of work, Ian brings the same energy and commitment to his personal life.
He has spent the last nine years coaching youth soccer and basketball in Pembroke. His daughter also plays a central role in his life.
“My 13 year old daughter Annabel is my everything,” he shares. “I’ve noticed I’ve become even more of an Uber driver lately for her and her friends. Fine by me.”
Ian also has a unique professional background. In the mid-1990s, he worked as a Local 88 Tunnel Worker on the Boston Harbor Project.
“We were lowered 450 feet under the Atlantic Ocean every night,” he explains. “At the time it was the longest tunnel with one shaft in the entire world.”
And for sports fans, one more detail stands out: Ian has a Dallas Cowboys tattoo on his right shoulder.
Motivation Through Competition and Leadership
Ian draws motivation from both competition and collaboration.
“I stay motivated by constantly competing with my team. We are all working on new business development together,” he says.
At the same time, the team’s collaborative energy helps build momentum.
“It feels good when we make some progress in a client and we will have the team cheering everyone along.”
Ian also credits Carlton’s leadership for setting the tone.
“My direct leaders at Carlton inspire me daily, and above all I’m inspired by the owners, Frederick Haddad and Jerry Cerrutti who are true powers of example. They are right on the floor alongside everyone else making calls.”
Advice for New Team Members
For those just starting at Carlton, Ian’s advice is simple.
“Be a sponge. Take it all in,” he says.
He also encourages new hires to take full advantage of the training program and ask questions along the way.
“The training program will help you immensely but don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
Finally, Ian emphasizes mindset and work ethic.
“You really need to have a good work ethic here, and you need to want to compete. That’s my motto. I need to get to the plate, get me an at bat, compete every day.”
Through consistency, energy, relationship building, and a competitive mindset, Ian continues to make an impact within the Life Sciences team and across Carlton National Resources.
Thank you, Ian, for the hard work and dedication you bring to Carlton National Resources.
