This month, we’re excited to spotlight Charles McCarthy, Technical Recruiter in Carlton National Resources’ Software/Hardware Engineering division.
Charles focuses on Software and Hardware recruiting by building relationships with engineers across the country. He connects them with opportunities that align with their experience, skill set, and career goals.
Much of his day is spent speaking directly with engineers, learning what they are looking for, and identifying where Carlton’s opportunities may be the right fit.
Building Relationships Through Technical Recruiting
For Charles, recruiting goes beyond filling an open position.
Staying connected with engineers over time helps him understand when they may be returning to the market. It also gives him insight into what they want in their next opportunity.
That preparation allows Charles to move quickly when the timing is right.
A Culture Built on Support
One of the things Charles values most about working at Carlton is the company culture.
“The best part about working at Carlton is the culture. Countless people to go to if you need help, advice, or ideas to bounce off,” Charles shared. “By far and away, the people you are next to and sitting next to daily are what make Carlton great.”
That supportive environment has played an important role in his professional development.
Charles joined Carlton without prior staffing industry experience. As a result, he had to learn a new business while developing his own recruiting approach.
“In my case, I was brand new to the staffing world, so making sure to ask questions and work through different challenges with anyone that had been there and done it in the past was important,” he said.
Learning From the Team
Charles applies that same mindset when offering advice to someone just starting at Carlton.
“Utilize everyone around you. It takes time, but doing it the right way and never hesitating to reach out if you have a question or concern is the way to be. Do your part and help the team in any way you can.”
For Charles, asking questions and learning from experienced teammates have been essential to his growth.
That collaborative approach continues to help him strengthen his knowledge of Software and Hardware recruiting and the technical markets Carlton supports.
Finding the Right Candidate for the Right Opportunity
As Charles has grown in his role, one of his biggest sources of motivation has become the impact he can have on another person’s career.
“I enjoy the challenge of finding the right candidate for the right opportunity, especially when the match isn’t immediately obvious,” Charles explained. “Every search is different, so it keeps the role interesting and pushes me to be creative and persistent.”
Each search brings a different challenge. That variety keeps the work engaging while encouraging Charles to remain flexible and persistent.
He also stays motivated by building long-term relationships with candidates and clients. In addition, he continues learning about the market and improving his recruiting skills.
Focusing on the Candidate Experience
Looking ahead, Charles wants to continue strengthening his relationships with engineers across the country.
“I think it’s important to stay persistent and continue to build relationships with engineers across the map,” he shared.
As his role evolves, Charles also hopes to place an even greater emphasis on the candidate experience.
By building strong connections and maintaining consistent communication, he aims to become a trusted resource throughout the hiring process.
Life Outside the Office
Outside of work, Charles enjoys spending time with friends, watching sports, and golfing.
Those interests give him time to recharge while maintaining the competitive mindset he brings to his work.
